Does StrongRoom need an account?
No. There is nothing to sign up for: no account, no email address, no password to remember and no iCloud. You open the app, make a Vault and set a pattern or passphrase. Pro is bought through your Apple Account, as with any App Store purchase, but StrongRoom receives no account details from it.
Why
An account would mean a server, and a server would mean somewhere your data or your identity could be kept. StrongRoom is built the other way: everything stays on the phone, so there is no one to log in to. Apple processes the payment for Pro; we receive no payment information, name or Apple Account details. The price of this is that nobody can reset your Vault for you, because nobody holds anything to reset.
What to do
- Install StrongRoom and make your first Vault. No sign-in screen appears.
- Choose a pattern or passphrase, and write down the Recovery Phrase the app shows once.
- If you move to a new iPhone, make an Export Package first and keep it yourself. An Apple Account cannot carry the Vault across.
- To use Pro on a new phone, sign in to the same Apple Account in the App Store and use Restore purchases in the app.
What this does not cover
It does not cover your Apple Account itself, which Apple holds and manages. See the limits for what StrongRoom does not protect against.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need iCloud on?
No. StrongRoom does not use iCloud, and its Vault data is not stored there.
Can I use it on two phones?
Each phone has its own Vaults. To move a Vault you restore an Export Package with its Recovery Phrase.
