Photo vault with no subscription: what to check before you pay

Look at three things: what is free, what stops if you stop paying, and whether recovery and export are behind the paywall. StrongRoom is free for one Vault of up to 10 items. Pro adds unlimited items, more Vaults and the Duress Vault, as a yearly or monthly plan with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers, or once. Items already stored always stay accessible.

What a vault should and should not charge for

Charging for room and extra features is fair: more storage, more Vaults, extras you can do without. Charging to rescue your own files is the opposite, and it is the one to avoid. A vault holds the only copy of things you care about, so a vault that locks them when a payment fails has more leverage over you than a usual app.

Three questions separate the two.

If I stop paying, can I still open what I stored?

The answer should be yes.

Can I still export it?

The way out should never be paid for.

Is recovery part of the paid plan?

If recovering access to your own Vault needs a subscription, you are paying to get back in.

What a free tier should show you

A free tier is fine when you can see its edges before you rely on it.

  • The limit. How many items fit, and what counts. Photos, videos and documents may be counted together or separately.
  • What happens at the limit. Does the app refuse new items, or does it quietly lock old ones?
  • What the trial does. A free trial usually converts to a charge unless you cancel before it ends. Apple handles billing. On iPhone you cancel in Settings by tapping your name, then Subscriptions, and Apple says to cancel at least 24 hours before a trial ends if you do not want it to renew. You can also ask Apple for a refund through reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple says eligibility varies by country or region.

Subscription or pay once

Neither is wrong. A subscription suits someone who wants the extras for a while and will cancel; paying once suits someone who knows they will keep using it. Compare the cost of the one-time plan with a year or two of the subscription, in your own currency, rather than relying on any headline price. We do not quote other apps' prices here and you should not trust a comparison that does.

What StrongRoom charges for

  • Free. One Vault of up to 10 items in total, photos, videos and documents together. All the lock options, the Recovery Phrase and optional Recovery PIN, folders, the in-app camera, the slideshow, Export Package and restore, and making and receiving Share Packages are free.
  • Pro. Unlimited items, more than one Vault, and the Duress Vault, which needs a second Vault to erase. Yearly $19.99 and monthly $4.99, each with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers, or $39.99 once. Prices vary by country; your App Store shows yours.
  • Never behind Pro. Recovery, export and the Empty Vault.
  • If you stop. Nothing already stored is locked. You can still open, export and delete everything, and extra Vaults you made stay. You just cannot add past the free limit until you subscribe or remove items.

There is no weekly plan and no family plan. Pro is bought through Apple and "Restore purchases" in the app brings it back on a new phone. How do I restore my StrongRoom Pro purchase?

What a paid plan does not fix

Paying does not make an app safer. It does not add a cloud copy, because StrongRoom has none, and it does not replace your own Export Package. No outside expert has checked the app yet. What StrongRoom does not protect against
