Limited Photos Access on iPhone: what it protects
When an app asks for your photos, you can choose specific ones instead of the whole library. Apple's developer documentation calls this limited library access: the app can fetch only the photos you selected, and you can manage that selection later in Settings. It narrows what one app can read. It does not hide or encrypt anything.
What the choice does
Apple describes the first prompt as having an extra option, Select Photos, which opens a screen where you pick the photos or videos the app may use. After that, according to Apple, the app is only able to fetch the assets you selected.
This matters because the alternative is the whole library: every photo, every video, every screenshot of a boarding pass. An app that edits one picture or attaches one photo to a message does not need all of that.
What an app can still see
Limited does not mean invisible. Apple's session on the feature says:
- The app can see the photos you selected and details about them, such as whether a photo was marked as a favourite, but only for your selection.
- Photos the app creates itself are automatically added to its selection.
- User albums cannot be fetched or created by the app, and there is no access to shared albums.
So an app with limited access can still copy, upload or keep any photo you gave it. Choosing a photo is the same as handing the app a copy of that photo. Pick only what you are happy for that app to hold.
Changing the selection later
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos and tap the app. Apple says that alongside the option to change the overall access level, you can manage the selection of photos. Apple's page on app privacy also notes that an app shows in the list only after it has asked for permission. Our guide on checking every app at once covers the full review. Apple also says that for apps which have not been updated for the feature, iOS prompts you once each time the app starts reading your photos: keep your current selection or change it. Expect to see that prompt now and then.
What limited access does not protect against
- It does not stop an app that already has a photo from keeping it.
- It does not protect photos from anyone who unlocks your phone.
- It says nothing about what the app does with the photo afterwards. Apple's App Privacy Report can show when an app touched Photos in the last seven days, but access is not the same as collection. iPhone privacy settings to change right now
StrongRoom imports through the same system picker, so it sees only the photos you pick each time. After an import it can optionally offer to delete the originals from your library; it asks every time. -> /features/import-photos-videos-files/ See also what the app cannot do. Frequently asked questions
Is limited access the same as hiding photos?
No. It decides which photos one app can read. The photos stay visible in your library and in every other app that has access.
Can an app force me to give full access?
An app can ask, and some features may work less well without it. The choice is yours in the prompt and later in Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos.
Will an app see photos I add later?
Apple says photos the app creates itself join its selection. Other new photos are not in the selection unless you add them.
