Password protect photos on iPhone
Photos on iPhone has no password for a single photo or a normal album. Apple documents a locked Hidden album, which opens with Face ID or Touch ID, and Notes can lock a note with a Notes password. A password of its own for photos means a locked note or a vault app whose whole Vault has its own pattern or passphrase.
What "password protect" can mean
People ask for three different things, and the answer differs.
- A password on one photo. Not offered in Photos, as far as Apple's pages we read show.
- A password on an album. Also not offered for ordinary albums. The Hidden album is locked, but with your phone's authentication rather than a password you choose.
- A password you choose, separate from the phone's passcode. Possible with a locked note, or with a vault app.
It also helps to ask who you are protecting against. A password that is the same as your passcode only helps against people who do not know the passcode.
A single photo
There is no per-photo password in Photos. The closest options are to hide the photo, which moves it to the Hidden album, or to move it elsewhere. Apple says hidden items do not appear in the Library or other albums. To hide a photo, press and hold it in Photos, tap Hide and confirm. How to hide photos, step by step. An album
You cannot lock an ordinary album. The Hidden album is the one locked album, and Apple says that on iOS 16 and later it requires authentication to open. With Settings > Apps > Photos > Show Hidden Album off, it is also not listed. Neither gives you a password you choose. Making a secret album, and what it can and cannot do. Notes
Notes is where iOS offers a separate password. Open a note, tap the More button, tap Lock, and pick your iPhone passcode or a Notes password. Apple says Face ID or Touch ID can be turned on as a way in, and that locked notes use end-to-end encryption for iCloud accounts.
Cautions straight from Apple's page: if you forget a Notes password, Apple cannot help you open the note, and resetting it does not unlock old locked notes. A locked note cannot contain PDFs, audio, video or Keynote, Pages or Numbers documents, and shared or tagged notes cannot be locked. It suits a few images; it is not a photo library.
A PDF
Another route is to put photos into a password-protected PDF. We have not verified a built-in iPhone way to do this, so see the dedicated guide instead of relying on a summary here. How to password protect a PDF on iPhone
A vault with its own credential
In a vault app, the password-like thing protects the whole Vault, not individual photos. In StrongRoom you choose a pattern (at least six dots on a 5 x 5 grid) or a passphrase, which is harder to guess than a pattern. A new passphrase needs at least 6 characters, and a longer one is stronger. Each Item inside is encrypted with AES-256-GCM. Wrong attempts slow down: after ten in five minutes, each further try waits longer, and a log keeps the last 20 failed tries, times only.
The credential also differs from your phone's passcode, so a person who knows one does not automatically have the other. Pattern and passphrase lock in detail. Pattern or passphrase lock
What StrongRoom cannot do: it cannot reset a forgotten pattern or passphrase from the cloud, because there is none; the Recovery Phrase is the way back, shown once, and an Export Package is the only copy off the phone. There is no Face ID unlock. What it does not protect against.
Comparison
| Option | Password you choose? | Covers | Weak spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hidden album | No, uses Face ID or Touch ID | Hidden photos and videos | Anyone who passes the phone's check |
| Locked note | Yes, a Notes password | Images in that note | No video or PDFs; forgotten password means lost note |
| Vault app | Yes, a pattern or passphrase | Everything in the Vault | Lose the credential and the Recovery Phrase and nothing opens |
Frequently asked questions
Can I password protect a single photo on iPhone?
Not in Photos. A locked note or a vault can hold it behind a password.
Can I use a different password for my photos?
Yes in a locked note (a Notes password) or in a vault app. The Hidden album uses your phone's authentication.
Is a locked note secure enough for private photos?
It is end-to-end encrypted for iCloud accounts, per Apple, but it cannot hold video or documents, and a forgotten password cannot be recovered by Apple.
What if I forget a vault password?
In StrongRoom you use the 12-word Recovery Phrase, or an optional Recovery PIN if you set one up. With neither, the Vault cannot be opened.
