Should you store a crypto seed phrase on an iPhone?

The usual advice is to keep a wallet seed phrase offline, written on paper or stamped on metal, in a place you control. A phone is not that. A phone connects to networks, runs many apps, and can be lost or seized. A phone vault can hold a convenience copy, but it should never be the only record of a seed.

Why offline is the usual advice

Whoever has the words controls the wallet, and there is no helpline that can reverse it. So the goal is to keep the words away from anything that can be reached remotely and away from anything that is lost with the phone. Paper in a safe place, or metal for fire and water, has no software to break.

What a phone adds

  • It is online and runs other people's code. Even with careful habits, you have more things to trust.
  • It is easy to lose or have stolen, and the words are lost with it unless they exist elsewhere.
  • Copies spread. A screenshot or a photo can reach the photo library, shared albums or a chat. Notes and cloud storage can mirror a note across devices.
  • It is a single copy. Water, a crack or a lost phone ends it.

If you still keep a copy on the phone

Treat it as the second copy, never the first. Keep it as a file inside an encrypted Vault, not in Photos or Notes. A Vault encrypts it on the phone with its own pattern or passphrase, and it has no cloud copy, which means fewer places the words can leak from but also no rescue if the phone is lost. Keep the paper original, and make an Export Package of the Vault to hold a second encrypted copy away from the phone.

Think about who might look. A Vault does not defend against someone watching you type, malware on the phone, or someone who forces you to open it. See the limits page.

StrongRoom's Recovery Phrase is not a wallet seed

StrongRoom's Recovery Phrase is 12 random words from a standard English word list. It exists to open an Export Package or reset access to a Vault, and it works only with StrongRoom. It does not open any wallet, and your wallet's seed does not open StrongRoom. Do not write the two on the same sheet without labelling them, and do not type either into the other app. StrongRoom shows the Recovery Phrase once and keeps no copy, so write it on paper straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to keep a seed phrase in a vault app?

It is safer than a note or a photo, but a phone is still not an offline medium. Use it only as an extra copy.

Is the StrongRoom Recovery Phrase a seed phrase?

No. It uses a standard word list but opens only StrongRoom data, and no wallet.

What if I lose the phone?

If the phone held the only copy, the words are gone. Keep a paper copy and an Export Package.
