Can Apple see my hidden photos?
Hiding does not change how iCloud treats a photo. Apple's iCloud security page says that under standard data protection, Photos are encrypted in transit and on the server, with the keys held by Apple. With Advanced Data Protection turned on, Photos is end-to-end encrypted and Apple does not hold the keys.
Why
Apple's Hidden album page describes hiding as a way to keep photos out of your Library and other albums and to lock them behind authentication. It does not say hidden photos are handled differently in iCloud, and Apple's Advanced Data Protection page does not mention hidden photos, so we cannot say how they are treated beyond that. Apple explains that under standard protection its data centres hold the keys so it can help you recover data. Under Advanced Data Protection, Apple says it cannot, and you must set up a recovery contact or recovery key before you can turn it on. Apple also lists some Photos metadata as staying under standard protection.
What to do
- Decide whether you are comfortable with Apple holding keys for photos in iCloud Photos.
- If not, read Apple's Advanced Data Protection page, set up a recovery contact or recovery key, and then turn it on. Apple notes it needs a supported software version on every device on the account.
- For photos that must never reach iCloud, keep them out of the Photos app: use a vault app's camera or import, then delete the original.
- Remember that Apple's deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days.
What this does not cover
It does not cover shared albums, which Apple says do not support Advanced Data Protection, or anything beyond Photos. StrongRoom's own limits are on the limits page.
Frequently asked questions
Does StrongRoom send anything to Apple or us?
StrongRoom makes no network connections of its own. The one exception is Apple's purchase service for Pro.
Is the Hidden album end-to-end encrypted?
Apple does not say so. Its encryption page describes Photos as a whole.
