What is EXIF data in iPhone photos?

EXIF is the information stored inside a photo file alongside the picture: when it was taken, with what, and often where. On iPhone you can see much of it by opening a photo in Photos and tapping Info. Apple lists the date and time, file name, phone model, lens and exposure details, and location. You can limit the location when you share.

See what a photo carries

Open a photo in Photos, then swipe up or tap the Info button. Apple's guide says the panel shows the capture date and time, the file name, the iPhone model and camera details such as lens and shutter speed. It also shows the location, with a link to Maps. That is the same kind of detail other apps and websites can read from a file you send them in full.

Which details travel depends on how you send the photo, so the Share Sheet's Location switch is worth checking each time.

What each detail reveals

  • Location. Where you were standing. For a photo taken at home, that is your address.
  • Date and time. When you were there, which can show your routine.
  • Phone model and lens. Less sensitive, but it identifies the device.
  • File name. Usually harmless, but it is part of the record.

How to limit it

  • Stop new photos recording location: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera > Never. Apple states that location metadata can be collected only if Camera has Location Services access.
  • Share without location: Share > Options > turn off Location.
  • Remove it from a kept photo: More > Adjust Info > Adjust Location > No Location.

Apple's Info panel also offers Adjust Date & Time and Adjust Location, so you can correct a photo's date or place. Step by step for location. How to remove location from photos on iPhone

What we cannot tell you

Apple's pages do not give a full list of everything a file stores, and we do not offer an EXIF tool. StrongRoom does not strip imported files: an imported photo is stored as it is. If you need a clean copy, check it in Photos before you import it, or share it from the Share Sheet with Location off.

Encryption keeps the file private on the phone. It does not change what the file contains once it leaves. -> /features/encryption/ See the limits. -> /security/limits/ The wider checklist. iPhone privacy settings to change right now
