Shared Library, Shared Albums and hidden photos
Apple's pages do not say how hidden photos behave in a Shared Library, so do not assume they are held back. What Apple does say is that everyone in a Shared Library can add, edit and delete its content, and that Shared Albums are not covered by Advanced Data Protection. Keep sensitive photos out of both.
What Apple documents about a Shared Library
- Up to five other people can join, so a library has up to six people.
- "All participants can add, edit, and delete content in the Shared Library."
- Items you contribute move out of your Personal Library and into the Shared Library.
- The creator can remove a participant or delete the library at any time. Participants can leave at any time.
- Deleted items go to Recently Deleted, and only the person who contributed an item can delete it from there.
Apple's Hidden album page and Shared Library page do not mention each other. We cannot tell you whether a hidden photo can be moved to a Shared Library or how it would appear.
Shared Albums
Shared Albums are a separate feature. Apple says Shared Albums do not support Advanced Data Protection, so that content stays under standard protection with Apple-held keys, even if you turned the setting on.
What you can do
- In Settings, Apps, Photos, Shared Library, check who is in the library and what is being shared. Apple's page also lists the "Sharing from Camera" option there, which sends camera photos straight to the Shared Library; check it is off if you do not want that.
- Keep photos you want private in your Personal Library, and switch the library view to Personal if you want to see only yours. The view switch moves between menus on different iOS versions, so use the path your phone shows.
- If a photo has already gone in, ask a contributor or remove yourself from the library after reading Apple's options for keeping copies.
What this does not cover
A vault app does not change who is in your Shared Library, and it cannot pull back something participants already have.

| Personal Library | You, and your other devices if iCloud Photos is on |
| Shared Library | Every participant, who can also edit and delete it |
