Hidden photos disappeared on iPhone: how to find them
Most often the album is just switched off. Apple says you can choose not to show the Hidden album, and then hidden photos are not visible in the Photos app. On an iPhone, open Settings, Apps, Photos and turn on "Show Hidden Album". The photos are not deleted by that setting.
Step 1: turn the album back on
- Open Settings, then Apps, then Photos.
- Turn on "Show Hidden Album".
- Open Photos, go to Collections, and look for Hidden under Utilities. Unlock it when asked.
Apple says the Hidden album is on and visible by default on iPhone, so if it is missing someone may have turned it off, or an update or restore may have changed things. We cannot tell you which.
Step 2: check that you are looking in the right place
Hidden photos do not appear in the Library or other albums, by design. Apple says hidden items "don't appear anywhere else in Photos". So a hidden photo is missing from your main grid on purpose. To bring a photo back to the grid, open the Hidden album, press and hold it and tap Unhide.
Step 3: check Recently Deleted and iCloud Photos
If the album shows but a photo is gone, it may have been deleted. Apple says that with iCloud Photos a deleted item is deleted everywhere you use iCloud Photos, and it stays in Recently Deleted for 30 days before it is removed permanently. Apple's pages we checked do not say how hidden items appear in Recently Deleted, so look there directly.
Also check whether iCloud Photos is on, and whether it is the same Apple Account on each device (Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos). Photos hidden on one device are hidden on the others only when iCloud Photos is used.
What this does not cover
If a photo was deleted and more than 30 days have passed, Apple says it cannot be recovered from Recently Deleted. A StrongRoom Vault has no cloud copy at all, which is why the Export Package matters.
