How to spot a fake calculator app on an iPhone
Look for a calculator that takes up a lot of storage, shows up in Screen Time with real usage, appears in your purchase history, or has features a calculator never needs. The iPhone already has its own calculator, so a second one deserves a question. Use these checks on your own phone, or on a child's with their knowledge.
A note on who this is for
This guide is for checking a phone you own, or one that belongs to your child, openly and with them. If you are thinking of searching another adult's phone without telling them, that is a different matter, and the checks here will not settle a trust problem. If you are worried about someone's safety, a support organisation will help more than a search will.
Check 1: storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Apple says this screen lists your apps and the space each one uses. A calculator should be tiny. A calculator-looking app that holds hundreds of megabytes or more of documents and data is holding something. Tap the app's name for details.
This is the most reliable sign, because stored files take space however good the disguise.
Check 2: Screen Time
Apple says Screen Time has to be turned on before it can show usage. If it is on, open Settings > Screen Time and tap the option to see all app and website activity (older versions of iOS call it See All Activity). A calculator that is used for long periods, or at odd hours, is worth a second look. Because it has to be turned on first, it may show nothing for earlier weeks.
Check 3: the App Library and hidden pages
Swipe left past your last Home Screen page to reach the App Library, which Apple says lists your apps. Apple also says apps on hidden Home Screen pages can still be found in the App Library, so a hidden page does not hide an app from this view. Scan the categories for a second calculator or utility you do not remember installing.
Check 4: purchase history
In the App Store, tap the photo or initials at the top, tap Apps & Purchase History, then Purchase History. This lists App Store purchases and charges for the Apple Account in use; the default view shows the last 90 days and you can change the filter. We could not confirm from Apple's page whether free downloads appear in it, so a clean history does not prove there is no hidden app. A subscription you do not recognise is a stronger sign.
Check 5: what it does
Open the calculator. A real one does sums and nothing else. Signs of a disguise:
- An odd name, a second calculator beside the built-in one, or a name that does not match its icon.
- Asking for a purchase, a sign-in or notification permission before it does sums.
- A code, a long press on a number or a sequence that changes the screen.
- A very large storage figure, or a name in Screen Time that does not match.
Entering a code you do not know is guesswork and can fail or lock the app. Asking the owner is the right method.
If you find one
With a child, talk first. Not every vault is a sign of trouble; many children and adults want privacy for ordinary reasons. Agree what the app is for, and consider whether Screen Time limits or a conversation fits better than a ban.
If you own it and want something that does not rely on a disguise, an encrypted vault does not need to hide at all. StrongRoom does not disguise itself; its protection is encryption and a separate lock. Calculator vault apps: how they work and why they exist
What these checks cannot do
None of them proves a phone is clean. A vault with a different disguise, an app on another device or a web service is outside what Settings shows. They also say nothing about whether a found app is safe: for that, see the checks for any vault app. How to choose a photo vault app for iPhone
Frequently asked questions
How do I find a hidden app on an iPhone?
Check iPhone Storage, Screen Time, the App Library and purchase history. Apple says hidden Home Screen pages still appear in the App Library.
Does the iPhone have a calculator already?
Yes, a built-in one, so a second calculator is a reason to look closer.
Will Screen Time show it?
It can show an app's usage once Screen Time is turned on, so it may show nothing for the time before that.
Is StrongRoom a fake calculator app?
No. It does not disguise itself.
