Is the iPhone Hidden album safe?
It keeps casual viewers out, not much more. Apple says the Hidden album is locked by default and needs authentication to open: Face ID or Touch ID on iPhone. Apple describes it as an album inside Photos, not as a separate encrypted store, and with iCloud Photos on, hidden photos are hidden on your other devices too.
Why
Hiding a photo moves it out of the Library and other albums, so someone scrolling your Photos does not see it. That solves one problem: a friend, a child or a colleague flicking through your phone. It does not change where the photo lives or who holds the keys. Apple's page does not state what protects the album beyond the authentication step, so we state nothing more. Apple also lets you turn off Show Hidden Album, in Settings, Apps, Photos. That makes the album invisible in Photos, which hides it without protecting it differently.
What to do
- Decide who you are hiding from. For a casual look at your phone, the Hidden album is enough.
- Check that Show Hidden Album is set the way you want, and that the lock is working.
- If a photo would hurt you if the wrong person saw it, keep it out of Photos and out of iCloud Photos: take or import it in a vault app and delete the original.
- Use a long device passcode. Anyone who knows it can usually do more than open the Hidden album.
What this does not cover
This covers the Hidden album only. For where hidden photos go in iCloud, see do hidden photos sync to iCloud; for what StrongRoom does not protect against, see the limits.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stop the Hidden album showing at all?
Yes. Apple says you can turn off Show Hidden Album in Settings, Apps, Photos, and the album is then not visible in Photos.
Does a vault app do more?
A vault app that encrypts, such as StrongRoom, keeps files out of Photos and encrypts them with its own key. It also has limits: see the compare page.
